Heading west on 42nd St., I saw a blind man approaching. Between us, a sidewalk entrepreneur had laid out pieces of jewelry on a blanket, which the rush-hour pedestrians skirted. Unable to detect the wares, the blind man walked across them. “Hey, man,” whined the laconic vendor, “watch your cane!”
