Deus Ex started a bad trend in games, which is claiming a whole lot of different gameplay "choices" that are actually the one one way they designed for and then several crappy ways that don't work great that you can also choose if you are obstinate and don't like fun.

I suspect only truly honest answer for how to spot blockbusters is: retrospectively. With catch that you need to pursue whatever you're doing with conviction. Like Folkman explained, "If your idea succeeds, everybody says you’re persistent. If it doesn’t, you’re obstinate." wsj.com/articles/loo...
