Why is having a deep and abiding interest and even expertise in something seen as a positive thing (except when it’s a ‘special interest’ and the ‘tism)?
And why is having varied interests but perhaps somewhat more shallow in the approach seen as being a dabbler, a dilettante?
Pls explain.

I don’t want season tickets to a sports team or a theater. I want to buy a package with one set of tickets to each major sports team in my market, plus one set each to opera, ballet, theater, symphony, zoo, aquarium, aviary, botanical garden, and all museums. Give me the dilettante cultural package!
