If falling and you want to stop, you must dissipate the accumulated kinetic energy. If you then want to get back to where you fell from, you must also expend energy to climb back to the previous point.
It’s not like you can just reverse things with an effort similar to how it felt going down

I know it's likely cliche and 'stupid' at this point but I rather like the kinetic 'I whirl my arms in a big sweeping motion, leap into the air, grasp *something* above me and yank down HARD to cast my lightning from the sky spell' rather than 'I wiggle my fingers and say the verbal component.'
